Job Description:
- DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTIONS
- (Including, but not limited to the following areas. Availability based on region and may vary each semester)
- Animation (New York):
- Animation staffs layout artists, animation directors, producers and productions assistants to develop cutting edge shows and characters.
- Business Development (New York and Santa Monica):
- Identifies new businesses, such as feature films, recreation, publishing and interactive products, that a network may consider for future expansion.
- Business and Legal Affairs (New York and Santa Monica):<>
- Supports the company by structuring, drafting and negotiating a variety of agreements, (with particular emphasis on sweepstakes, contests, and promotions), mergers & acquisitions, corporate finance, real estate, compliance, litigation and employment/employee benefits.
- Communications (New York and Santa Monica):
- Interfaces with all the network departments, serves as the media center for each network and acts as the liaison between the press and a network.
- Consumer Products (New York and Santa Monica):
- Extends programming trademarks to create licensing and other products, including book publishing, home video, and audio tapes, apparel, magazines and children's toys.
- Creative Services (New York):
- Provides copy, design, mechanical and print and video production on a diverse range of client projects. The department works closely with all of our clients to ensure that the work is true to the cutting-edge creative tone that people expect from MTV Networks.
- Development (New York and Santa Monica):
- Responsible for creating original programming for the networks. This department meets with producers, writers and directors from the inside and outside the company who come up with new ideas for shows.
- Finance (New York and Santa Monica):
- Supports MTV Networks' overall financial goals through the following areas: Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Bank Reconciliation, Credit and Collection, Financial Planning, General Accounting,Production Accounting, Tax and Treasury.
- Human Resources (New York and Santa Monica):
- Partners with management in negotiations and handles employee relations within a channel. HR handles recruitment and staffing, compensation, benefits and HR systems administration and policy and procedure development.
- International (New York):
- Continues to develop its networks abroad, packaging and licensing programs to fit varying international market conditions. Includes: marketing, research, production, press, programming and sales.
- Information Systems and Technology (New York and Santa Monica):
- Supports web programming, web development, software testing, quality assurance, desktop support and security.
- Marketing (New York and Santa Monica):
- Communicates the value of each network to viewers and the cable community in general. There are various areas within Marketing that contribute to the overall impact of the networks' marketing message. These areas include: Affiliate/Partner Marketing, Consumer Marketing, Integrated Marketing, Music Marketing, and Online Marketing.
- Music and Talent (New York and Santa Monica):
- The networks' main link to entertainment talent. The department obtains videos from labels, determines which videos will be accepted for air, and where and when to play them. This group also coordinates the musical and celebrity talent for their respective channel.
- National Advertising Sales (New York and Santa Monica:
- Generates a significant amount of revenue for MTV Networks by selling air time. The department consists of the following groups: Advertising Sales Planning, Audience Research and Traffic.
- On-Air Motion Graphics (New York):
- Develops the on-screen creative feel of each network, using images and graphics to promote programs.
- Planning and Design/Core Services (New York and Santa Monica):
- Manages for all MTVN offices issues related to physical space such as real estate strategy, short and long-term space planning, design and construction, interior design, furniture selection and purchase, moves and renovations.
- Production (New York and Santa Monica):
- Develops and produces series, specials and long-form programming in the studio and on location, giving special consideration to content, style, location and talent issues, programming, scripts and packaging. Areas include: news, news & documentaries, promos, live, home video, creative, off-channel and concert.
- Production Management (New York and Santa Monica):
- Oversees the business and financial aspects of a television production. Writing budgets, tracking costs, hiring crews and makeup artists, overseeing shoots, processing invoices, obtaining guest releases and premise permits, processing timesheets, and scheduling edits are all parts of production management’s role.
- Programming (New York and Santa Monica):
- Selects shows to air on the channel, creates the air schedule for the shows and works with producers on original programming. Programming also schedules all on-air promotions for the channel as well as schedules cross channel promotions and psa’s. Programming creates stunts and events to drive viewership and to market it to sponsors.
- Public Affairs (New York):
- Provide meaningful, pro-social initiatives, using the reach and power of each channel to create awareness and motivate action for current issues affecting society.
- Radio Network (New York and Santa Monica):
- Provides daily content for radio stations located around the United States. This format-specific content ranges from “rip-and-read” music news stories to fully produced news segments hosted by MTV and VH1 talent.
- Research (New York and Santa Monica):
- Uses focus groups, surveys and other tools to provide qualitative and quantitative support in order to develop an understanding of each network's target audience.
- Security:
- Manages security operations at Viacom facilities throughout the Untied States including patrol, incident response, investigation and crisis management. We are tasked with production security management for Viacom divisions including onsite management for large scale events and an advisory role for smaller productions and serial content.
- Special Events (New York and Santa Monica):
- Handles small and large non-televised events, like parties, dinners, conferences and trade shows.
- Standards and Practices (New York and Santa Monica):
- Responsible for overseeing all content for all original MTVN programming that airs, ensuring it meets the standards of MTVN. We are also responsible for screening music videos weekly and meeting with the music and talent department to approve music videos that air on our channel.
- Talent and Casting (New York and Santa Monica):
- Organizes auditions and bookings for programs, promos, movies, specials.
- Tape Library (New York and Santa Monica):
- Supports and works with all departments within MTV Networks, primarily production groups. They provide tapes, both for screening and editorial functions. Facilitate duplication requests, traffic on-air material to the broadcast facility (NOC), distribute raw tape stock, and catalog and store all footage and elements.
- Wardrobe (New York):
- Supports the studio production teams in styling in house talent or guests – always on the cutting edge of fashion and trends.
- Web/Digital or Multimedia (New York and Santa Monica):
- Creates the most compelling, innovative experience on the web. This group also creates communication tools and online community experiences that visitors can use to interact with one another and MTVN.

Qualifications: You must be registered to receive college credit (i.e., internship class, seminar or transcript notation) with your college or university for the semester you are interning, and must provide official documentation on school letterhead confirming this information upon acceptance of the internship.
•If your school does not offer college credit, then you must be registered for an independent study project directly related to the internship.
•The program runs for a minimum of 10 weeks.
•You must be available to work a minimum of two full days per week (no weekends), but some departments may require more than two days. Typical business hours are 9:00AM to 6:00PM.
•Internships are open to college juniors and seniors, though some departments also accept graduate students and law school students.
•Please note that this is an unpaid internship, and we do not offer housing
